Charles Weerts takes double honours for W-Racing Team in round three of the Gulf Sportscar Championship at Dubai Autodrome.

Driving the WRT Audi R8 LMS, Weerts had taken pole for race one during the morning qualifying session and never looked back from there, the Belgium making his return to the championship after missing round two because of his school exams.

The #21 of Weerts tore away at the front but things were closer behind him. With an Audi R8 LMS of their own, new entrants K&K Duck Racing enjoyed a race long duel with the #88 Ferrari 488 Challenge Dragon Racing car of Leon Price and Rob Barff.

Glued together for the duration, it was the #33 K&K Duck Racing car that came out on top, Daniel Skalicky and Petr Kacirek securing second spot on their championship debut.

Third in the overall classification, the #88 Dragon Racing Ferrari also collected the class win for the GT Cup.

Knight Connection, unable to compete the second race of the day for technical reasons, took the race one Proto class win.

The second race followed a very similar pattern to the first as Weerts pulled away from the battling K&K Duck Racing Audi and Dragon Racing Ferrari as night descended over the Dubai Autodrome.

For a long time it looked as though Price and Barff were going to come out on top this time around but Skalicky and Kacirek took second place shortly before the stops.

The two wins for Weerts, joined to the earlier win in round one, puts Weerts in with a real chance of claiming the championship title for WRT.

Charles Weerts (#21 W-Racing Team Audi R8 LMS)

“The car was really good. I was confident with the car, we had a good pace and it all went well so yeah, it’s good. I was not worried about coming back into the championship after missing round two but I was thinking ‘will I be on the pace right away after not being in the car for two months’, but actually when I got into the car, I didn’t think about it. It was strange but after one or two laps it was back. It’s like riding a bicycle, you don’t forget.

“It would be great to add to my F4UAE championship. As I’ve said before, I love the UAE so for the moment I am quite successful here and I will try to keep that up also in Europe.”
